Poorly Made

Now, I'm sure I am the one who's mostly at fault for not recognizing most of these guys. However, as a quiz game, this is rather poorly done. That you have to type in the character's name is often a hindrance; there are several characters whom I recognized, but couldn't remember their names, only remembered what they appeared in, or the game simply would not accept my answers. An alternative method of input would have been preferable.

Hysterically Funny

In years past, Newgrounders have started to take themselves more seriously, and the site's started to focus on more "mature", artsy stuff, like Brackenwood and There she is!! That's not a bad thing, not at all, but it's nice to see a game that's more like the old NG- horrifically gory and proud of it, man!

While it IS very simple, and quite short, it's surprisingly quite challenging; I mostly made it through with nothing but trial and error. The 16-bit style graphics are a nice touch, too.

Incredible

While admittedly, most of your concepts here are nothing new, originality is unimportant next to fun, and good lord, DN8 is fun. It begins simple, but GRADUALLY becomes more difficult - a nice touch, compared to the difficulty spikes common with Bullet Hell.

The "evolution" aspect is handled very well; each selectable adaptation gives you a distinct advantage that the other choice does not, and I more than once found myself thinking "oh, I should have picked that one instead." The boss fights are hard at first, but the true extraordinary challenge they provide at the end of the game must be seen to be believed. Although, I have to say, the procedurally generated music and enemies, while a cool idea, aren't particularly interesting to see or hear.

Congratulations, friend. Unlike SOME reviewers on here, I'm giving you a 10/10 because I truly feel you've earned it.

Squize responds:

Thanks man.

I'm the first to admit it's not the most original game in the world, there are lots of influences ( OutRun being one of them, which no one has picked up on yet ).
People do like pointing out the influences though, I've never understood why not being a 100% original in some way detracts from it being a fun game or not.

And rant over :)

A mediocre Asteroids clone

Now, you are FAR from the first person to make a Flash port of Asteroids. But this isn't even a particularly good example of one such clone; the ship is too small in comparison to the screen, so it's way too easy to get hit by the asteroids, and the graphics are rather bland - I'm assuming you took them from a stock images website.

That said, the programming is quite competent and does a good job of emulating the physics of the original game, so you get a 6. I hope to see your next games soon.

zerojosh responds:

Ha! Over on the mochi games forum people complained that the ship was to big so I shrunk it (and all other elements) by 75%. The graphics are original, modeled in Maya (aside from the the graphic in the upgrade shop - that was stock).

What the crap?

This is the strangest thing I've ever seen. Thank you, sir. You get ten stars.

Thumbs down

This wasn't very good. The graphics are a bit too simplistic, you can only control with W, A, and D (The Arrow Keys DO NOT work), and the randomized algorithm is waaaaaay out of wack. I've played for 20 minutes, and I'm pretty sure that it is impossible to get over 100 feet. I will still look forward to your next project, but this game is just bad.

Good idea, bad presentation

I wanted to like this game. Reading the instructions, it sounds like a really cool idea. And it is... but if only I could play it.

DragonTale runs incredibly slowly. I don't know whether it was a bad internet connection or if the game simply has too much stuff going on, but either way it's nearly unplayable for me. I was mashing buttons frantically, trying to see if ANYTHING worked, but when the Dragon finally caught up with my commands, he did nothing I actually wanted him to do.

However, the graphics- which I understand were the main point of the game- are excellent. The animations are fluid and the tail, in particularly, moves very realistically (though, as I mentioned earlier, not very fluidly). Kudos to Max Fishman for a job well done.

In conclusion, DragonTale could have been an incredible game. It just has too much going on for it's own good. Hopefully, a patch, remake or sequel could fix this.

WhiteyGames responds:

I apologize to all for the laggyness, I only tested it in flash player, which ran fine, but it slows down a lot in the browser. And so yes, a fix is currently in the works. :) Should be up tomorrow, check back soon!

Incredible

You've done a very good job. The game is hard from the start and doesn't let up, yet somehow I never got frustrated- just more excited. The music is catchy, but admittedly it gets a bit annoying after a while (the only thing that prevents this from getting a ten). This is going on my favorites for sure.
Bonus: You win the award for "best first submission ever."

good not great

It's way too easy to kill the enemies and way too hard to die.... but it's actually fun.

WOW!

GREAT Graphics, and fun gameplay. You have made the ultimate Flash game.

Alright, worms! I've got a lot of time to spend, and I don't want it wasted! Now go make something that impresses the hell out of me, and I MIGHT give you 3 stars! Make the best damn thing I've ever seen, and you get 4! What? 5 stars? BWAHAHA! DREAM ON!
